Quickstart:System Setup
Operating System
This guide will assume you are using a Red Hat Linux OS (for this guide we used Rocky Linux 9), see our recommended platforms for other options.
Other Tools
EPrints requires Apache (with mod_perl), MySQL and Perl with some extra modules. Various utilities like wget, tar and unzip would also be useful. See our required software page for more details on where to find these tools if you are missing them.
Dependencies
Before we can install the EPrints system, we should install a few packages it relies on.
- Pre-install and enable the EPEL DNF repository.
dnf install epel-release
- Pre-install and enable the CodeReady Builder DNF repository.
- RHEL
subscription-manager repos --enable "codeready-builder-for-rhel-$(releasever)-$(arch)-rpms"
- CentOS Stream / Rocky Linux 8
dnf config-manager --set-enabled powertools
- CentOS Stream / Rocky Linux 9 and 10
dnf config-manager --set-enabled crb
- RHEL
- Pre-install MySQL server and client and make sure the former is enabled and running.

dnf install mysql-server mysql mysql-devel
systemctl enable --now mysqld
- CentOS / Rocky Linux:
dnf install mariadb-server mariadb mariadb-devel
systemctl enable --now mariadb

- From the MySQL command prompt, pre-configure an eprints user with password for MariaDB/MySQL, which can be used as the Database super user when creating the database for an archive. (Be sure to change the password from "changeme"):
CREATE USER 'eprints'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED by 'changeme';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO 'eprints'@'localhost' WITH GRANT OPTION;
- As root, from a command prompt add the eprints user:
adduser eprints
