R.e.proudfoot@leeds.ac.uk:

[[Category:Howto]][[Category:Staff]]
This is a guide to best practices when editing the EPrints wiki.

The EPrints wiki uses a standard installation of MediaWiki. A basic guide to understanding wiki markup for formatting pages can be found here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Formatting

The main aim of these guidelines is to help keep information stored on the wiki usable, organised and discoverable. This means that other users will be able to get the best use of out your help.

Don't worry too much about editing the wiki. If you think something is wrong change it. We can always use the undo button. Without your edits we would not be able to keep the wiki up to date.

Want a quick introduction? View the [[Training_Video:EPrints_Wiki_Basics|eprints wiki basics training video]]

==Discoverablity==
There are a few things you can do to make your page discoverable. The most important of these is '''using Categories'''. You can see a full list of categories here: [[Special:Categories]]. Decide which category your page best fits into. Most user created pages will probably fit into [[:Category:Howto|Howto]] or [[:Category:Plugins|Plugins]].

To add a plugin to the Howto category add <nowiki>[[Category:Howto]]</nowiki>. You will find your page is immediately added to the index page for that category.

If you are not sure which category your page belongs in pick one which sounds sensible. It is better to have your page in the wrong category than in no category at all.

Another way to increase discoverablity of your ideas is good page formatting.

==Page Formatting==

===Headings===
To make a page easy to navigate internally it is advisable to use sensibly nested headings and sub headings. This will result in neat table of contents at the top of your page. It also makes the document more readable.

If your page is very short you may want to remove the table of contents by placing the
<nowiki>__NOTOC__</nowiki>
directive at the top of the page.

===Versioning===
When you write a wiki page it is very useful if you can include at the top the versions of eprints you think this applies to. For example

Applicable to 3.2.1+

If you know a page does not work for a version of EPrints (probably from experience) edit the page to include that.

===Linking===
If you refer to material from another wiki page or another website please place a link to it. It makes moving around the wiki much smoother and really increases the usefulness of your document. Note: it will often be useful to link to a page in the EPrints_3_Reference category since this explains some of the configuration in detail.

===Code in text===
Often you will want put code snippets in text. If you have one line of code or more place the code in a <pre> like so:

#My lines of code go in here

The most readable way to present source code is to surround it with <source lang="..."> source code here </source> tags, where "..." is the language name, such as perl or xml. For example:

my $fields = $session->get_conf('etd_ms','fields');
foreach my $field_conf (@{$fields})
{
my $tags = $plugin->generate_tag($eprint, $field_conf);
foreach my $tag (@{$tags})
{
push @dcdata, ($tag) if $tag;
}
}

Some times you will have a few tokens of code that you wish to use in a sentance. To do this use the <code> tag. For example when I want to talk about
$c->{set_eprint_automatic_fields}
in a sentance.

===Lists===
Bulleted lists are a very clear and easy way to convey information clearly and concidely. Do not shy away from using bulleted lists or numbered lists (see the mediawiki article above). You can also easy nest lists.

== Writing Style ==

Writing style is very important. When people come to use your wiki page they are trying to quickly find information. Try not to over elaborate. Use short sentances and short paragraphs.

Most readers will be programmers who, as a rule, don't much care if the grammer isnt perfect (though that helps). If you have something useful to add we would rather you wrote something with dodgey grammer than nothing at all.

If you use code snippets from your repository you may have to modify it slightly so that general readers can understand. You dont want to go into a lengthly explanation of your repository set up just so that you can quote code from it.

If you find your page is getting very long you may find you should be making it into 2 pages. If you can logically split the information into two pages please do. It makes your document less daunting.

This page has been created in the run-up to the EPrints Community Contributions day on November 18th, 2015

== Objectives ==

This event is intended to bring the all parts of the EPrints community together to improve the software and documentation. We hope to achieve:

* code improvements
* wiki curation
* training and demonstration videos
* community members interacting and training each other

== Event Run Up ==

Things for participants to do before the event:

* Register for the Wiki via the EPrints LDAP server at [http://trac.eprints.org/ldap/ http://trac.eprints.org/ldap/]
* If you have an a suggestion for an interest group, add it below
* Please add your name to an interest group that looks interesting (see [[Training_Video:EPrints_Wiki_Basics]] for how to edit the wiki)

== On the Day ==

=== Jumping In ===

So, you have time to contribute and need to know how to get started. Here are your options:

* Pick an interest group below, and join it
* If you don't know how to join, contact one of the event organisers
** Adam Field
*** @gobfrey on twitter
*** af05v@ecs.soton.ac.uk
** Valerie McCutcheon
*** 0141-330-2674
** Rachel Proudfoot
*** 0113 343 4554

=== Interest Groups ===

Any contribution that can be made is welcome, whether it's a minor edit to a wiki page or a bugfix. However, it may be profitable to run a number of discussion groups in the morning around areas of interest. These discussion groups can then set up work to be accomplished in the afternoon.

* 10:00 - 11:00 Interest groups meet (skype, google hangout?), make decisions and assign tasks
** What problem are we solving?
** How will we work?
** What communication platform will we use? Skype, Google Hangouts, Google Docs, EMail?
** Who will do what?
* 11:00 - 13:00 Morning Contributions
* 14:00 - 16:00 Afternoon Contributions
* 16:00 - 16:30 Interest groups wrap-up and reporting.

Each interest group should have a leader who is responsible for chairing the initial meeting, making sure the logistics run smoothly and creating some kind of record of the day (blog post, wiki page, etc).

==== Group 1: Community Training Course ====

We're coordinating via a [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CPegvGl9BO45E4ye5_Bpk7e3kurc_spEL3OcmGcUZyA/edit?usp=sharing Google Doc]

This interest group will be looking at Github, folding in pull requests and evaluating bugs.

Get on the google hangout now [https://hangouts.google.com/call/md4isxlevojprl6n3vpp2c3dtua https://hangouts.google.com/call/md4isxlevojprl6n3vpp2c3dtua]
==== Group 3: Community Contributions, Best Practices and Processes ====

This group will look at how barriers to community contributions (at all levels) can be lowered and community engagement can be promoted. We'll also look at community best practices and processes in EPrints. '''If you don't make the 10 o'clock meeting, don't worry, just come and join us at the Google Doc below.'''

Members

Possible subtopics - what do users want?

* User friendly topic guide on wiki
* reliable version information (cf. [[Required_software]]) incl. wiki update
* Impact
* Open Access - drafting community requirements for a standard functionality in EPrints.

=== Independent Contribution ===

Participants are encouraged to join an interest group, but have the option of working independently on their own pet project or objective. Please put your name in the members list below, with a brief description of what you will be progressing.

Members:

* Luke Skywalker (I'll be researching the Force)

=== Logistics ===

Each interest group should decide on the appropriate platform to use for communications and coordination.

== Post Event ==

It would be appreciated if each team could produce a write-up of the days activities for the benefit of future events and to show the value of the day. It should be no more than 400 words and a bulleted list of outcomes. Feel free to post these on any blog or platform you wish, but Adam Field would quite like to gather them all together in a blog post about the day.

==Discoverablity==

==Page Formatting==

===Headings===

===Versioning===
When you write a wiki page it is very useful if you can include at the top the versions of eprints you think this applies to. For example

Applicable to 3.2.1+

If you know a page does not work for a version of EPrints (probably from experience) edit the page to include that.

===Linking===
If you refer to material from another wiki page or another website please place a link to it. It makes moving around the wiki much smoother and really increases the usefulness of your document. Note: it will often be useful to link to a page in the EPrints_3_Reference category since this explains some of the configuration in detail.

===Code in text===
Often you will want put code snippets in text. If you have one line of code or more place the code in a <pre> like so:

#My lines of code go in here

The most readable way to present source code is to surround it with <source lang="..."> source code here </source> tags, where "..." is the language name, such as perl or xml. For example:

my $fields = $session->get_conf('etd_ms','fields');
foreach my $field_conf (@{$fields})
{
my $tags = $plugin->generate_tag($eprint, $field_conf);
foreach my $tag (@{$tags})
{
push @dcdata, ($tag) if $tag;
}
}

Some times you will have a few tokens of code that you wish to use in a sentance. To do this use the <code> tag. For example when I want to talk about
$c->{set_eprint_automatic_fields}
in a sentance.

===Lists===
Bulleted lists are a very clear and easy way to convey information clearly and concidely. Do not shy away from using bulleted lists or numbered lists (see the mediawiki article above). You can also easy nest lists.

== Writing Style ==

If you do not already have research data management functionality in EPrints we recommend you use this plug-in (link to). This was created as part of some Jisc projects which then amended this particular plug-in to accommodate requirements from various research organisations.
* Some EPrints sites have added research data to a pre-existing EPrints repository - for example, a repository being used to manage published outputs e.g. University of Southampton http://eprints.soton.ac.uk/
* Other EPrints sites have a separate EPrints repository for research data e.g. University of Leeds https://archive.researchdata.leeds.ac.uk/

-Plugins-
* The ReCollect plugin customises EPrints to manage research data. The plugin changes the EPrints workflow and should be deployed with caution on a pre-existing repository.

==Discoverablity==

You will find your page is immeadiately added to the index page for that category.

If you are not sure which category your page belongs in pick one which sounds sensible. It is better to have your page in the wrong category than in no category at all.

Another way to increase discoverablity of your ideas is good page formatting.

==Page Formatting==

===Headings===

===Versioning===
When you write a wiki page it is very useful if you can include at the top the versions of eprints you think this applies to. For example

Applicable to 3.2.1+

If you know a page does not work for a version of EPrints (probably from experience) edit the page to include that.

===Linking===
If you refer to material from another wiki page or another website please place a link to it. It makes moving around the wiki much smoother and really increases the usefulness of your document. Note: it will often be useful to link to a page in the EPrints_3_Reference category since this explains some of the configuration in detail.

===Code in text===
Often you will want put code snippets in text. If you have one line of code or more place the code in a <pre> like so:

#My lines of code go in here

The most readable way to present source code is to surround it with <source lang="..."> source code here </source> tags, where "..." is the language name, such as perl or xml. For example:

my $fields = $session->get_conf('etd_ms','fields');
foreach my $field_conf (@{$fields})
{
my $tags = $plugin->generate_tag($eprint, $field_conf);
foreach my $tag (@{$tags})
{
push @dcdata, ($tag) if $tag;
}
}

Some times you will have a few tokens of code that you wish to use in a sentance. To do this use the <code> tag. For example when I want to talk about
$c->{set_eprint_automatic_fields}
in a sentance.

===Lists===
Bulleted lists are a very clear and easy way to convey information clearly and concidely. Do not shy away from using bulleted lists or numbered lists (see the mediawiki article above). You can also easy nest lists.

== Writing Style ==

You dont want to go into a lengthly explaination of your repository set up just so that you can quote code from it.

If you find your page is getting very long you may find you should be making it into 2 pages. If you can logically split the information into two pages please do. It makes your document less daunting.
